All-Rachmaninoff
"Experience Rachmaninoff’s gorgeous Second Symphony and his varied and stunning Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini."
Alexander Malofeev, born in 2001 and known as the young "Russian genius" after winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition, takes on the work of another "Russian genius" by performing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
The concerto-like piece, consisting of 24 variations of a popular violin tune, allows Malofeev to "[lead] us, like a tornado, towards excess and madness" (Crescendo Magazine).
International Classical Music Award-winning conductor Dima Slobodeniouk makes his LA Phil debut, guiding the orchestra through Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony, with its gorgeous melodies wandering between heartrending slow movements, a brass-heavy scherzo, and a lively finale.
